Tractable Simulation of Error Correction with Honest Approximations to Realistic Fault Models
In previous work, we proposed a method for leveraging efficient classical
simulation algorithms to aid in the analysis of large-scale fault tolerant
circuits implemented on hypothetical quantum information processors. Here, we
extend those results by numerically studying the efficacy of this proposal as a
tool for understanding the performance of an error-correction gadget
implemented with fault models derived from physical simulations. Our approach
is to approximate the arbitrary error maps that arise from realistic physical
models with errors that are amenable to a particular classical simulation
algorithm in an "honest" way; that is, such that we do not underestimate the
faults introduced by our physical models. In all cases, our approximations
provide an "honest representation" of the performance of the circuit composed
of the original errors. This numerical evidence supports the use of our method
as a way to understand the feasibility of an implementation of quantum
information processing given a characterization of the underlying physical
processes in experimentally accessible examples.Comment: 34 pages, 9 tables, 4 figure
The Influence of platelet-rich Plasma on the immunological induced knee joint arthritis in a large animal model
The study was undertaken to investigate the effect of platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) on antigen- induced arthritis (AIA) of the knee joint in a porine model. The systemical immunization in a pig was induced by bovine serum albumin (BSA) injection. Arthritis was induced by intraarticular BSA injection. In a second step PRP was injected into the selected knee joints of the animals. Signs of arthritis were documented by Luminex assay messurements of Interleukin-1 (IL-1), IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and protein content. Further plain histologic analysis, Safranin O staining, and immunohistochemistry analysis for type II collagen (CII), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and VEGF were examinated.
The plain histologic analysis showed severe arthritic changes in the synovium. Collagen II and Safranin O staining showed decreased proteoglycan and CII content in cartilage and increased levels of IL-6 and VEGF in synovium and cartilage. Increased protein concentrations of IL-6, VEGF, IL-1, and IGF-1 in synovium and cartilage were shown in the immunohistochemistry analysis. Treatment with PRP showed less severe arthritic changes in the synovium and cartilage.
In conclusion we described a porcine model of AIA. Our experiments demonstrated that PRP can reduce arthritic changes in the synovial membrane and cartilage
Engineering Effective Hamiltonians for Magnetic Resonance
Effective Hamiltonian engineering is a powerful technique that utilises time-dependent perturbation theory to suppress or enhance certain effects that arise from otherwise weak Hamiltonian terms, when an experimenter attempts to control the evolution of a quantum system. With this thesis we conduct theoretical, numerical and experimental explorations of two somewhat different kinds of effective Hamiltonian engineering in magnetic resonance, aimed at elongating spin coherence times and increasing spin polarization.
First, we provide a general framework for computing arbitrary time-dependent perturbation theory terms relevant for effective Hamiltonian engineering, as well as their gradients with respect to control variations, that immediately enables the use of gradient methods for optimizing these terms. We demonstrate the method in various numerical control engineering examples, including decoupling, recoupling, and robustness to control errors and stochastic errors. We then utilize the method in high-resolution nanoscale magnetic resonance experiments that use high-sensitivity silicon nanowire based force detection. With
our numerically engineered control sequences, that are optimized to suppress spin decoherence under dipolar and chemical shift Hamiltonians, we achieve an increase by a factor of 500 in the proton spin coherence time for low-temperature, (50-nm)^3 polystyrene sample. We harness the enhanced spin coherence times for magnetic resonance imaging experiments on the nanoscale, and achieve one-dimensional imaging resolution below 2 nm on the same sample.
Secondly, we study low-temperature, high magnetic field nuclear hyperpolarization of phosphorus donor nuclei in isotopically enriched 28-silicon crystal irradiated with nonresonant above band gap laser light. We demonstrate hyperpolarization with a time constant of 51.5 s, and introduce a phonon-mediated effective Hamiltonian model detailing the process. We verify our model by designing and conducting a series of magnetic resonance experiments
Energy efficient visible light communications relying on amorphous cells
In this paper, we design an energy efficient indoor Visible Light Communications (VLC) system from a radically new perspective based on an amorphous user-to-network association structure. Explicitly, this intriguing problem is approached from three inter-linked perspectives, considering the cell formation, link-level transmission and system-level optimisation, critically appraising the related optical constraints. To elaborate, apart from proposing hitherto unexplored Amorphous Cells (A-Cells), we employ a powerful amalgam of Asymmetrically Clipped Optical Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) and transmitter pre-coding aided Multi-Input Single-Output (MISO) transmission. As far as the overall systemlevel optimisation is concerned, we propose a low-complexity solution dispensing with the classic Dinkelbach’s algorithmic structure. Our numerical study compares a range of different cell formation strategies and investigates diverse design aspects of the proposed A-Cells. Specifically, our results show that the A-Cells proposed are capable of achieving a much higher energy efficiency per user compared to that of the conventional cell formation for a range of practical Field of Views (FoVs) angles
High-Resolution Nanoscale Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy
We present a new method for high-resolution nanoscale magnetic resonance
imaging (nano-MRI) that combines the high spin sensitivity of nanowire-based
magnetic resonance detection with high spectral resolution nuclear magnetic
resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. By applying NMR pulses designed using optimal
control theory, we demonstrate a factor of reduction of the proton spin
resonance linewidth in a volume of polystyrene and
image proton spins in one dimension with a spatial resolution below

Anticipatory User-Association for Indoor Visible Light Communications: Light, Follow Me!
In this paper, a radically new anticipatory perspective is taken into account when designing the user-to-Access Point (AP) associations for indoor Visible Light Communications (VLC) networks, in the presence of users' mobility and wirelesstraffic dynamics. In its simplest guise, by considering the users' future locations and their predicted traffic dynamics, the novel anticipatory association prepares the APs for users in advance, resulting in an enhanced location- and delay-awareness. This is technically realised by our contrived design of an efficient approximate dynamic programming algorithm. More importantly, our study is in contrast to most of the current research in the area of indoor VLC networks, where static network environment was mainly considered. Hence, our study is able to draw insights on the performance trade-off between delay and throughput in dynamic indoor VLC networks. It is shown that the novel anticipatory design is capable of significantly outperforming the conventional benchmarking designs, striking an attractive performance trade-off between delay and throughput. Quantitatively, the average system queue backlog is reduced from 15 [ms] to 8 [ms], when comparing the design advocated to the conventional benchmark at the per-user throughput of 100 [Mbps], in a 15×15×5 [m 3 ] indoor environment associated with 8×8 APs and 20 users walking at 1 [m/s]
